COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biology and History and Philosophy of Science BSc at Leeds offers a multidisciplinary approach that combines the study of life sciences with historical and philosophical perspectives on science. In the first year, students develop foundational knowledge and skills through compulsory modules in cell biology, genetics, diversity of life, whole organism studies, and laboratory techniques, alongside the history and philosophy of science, which explores the origins, development, and nature of scientific knowledge. Optional modules allow further exploration of topics such as magic, science and religion, history of medicine, psychology, and technology. In the second year, students build on these foundations with advanced research and study skills in biology, and research methods in history and philosophy of science. Optional modules provide opportunities to explore subjects including ecology, human genetics, evolution, urban ecology, and global challenges. In the final year, students undertake a substantial independent research project in either biology or the history and philosophy of science, applying the skills and knowledge gained throughout the course. They also study philosophy of biology, reflecting on key concepts such as genes, organisms, human nature, species, and disease. Additional optional modules in areas such as bioethics, applied genetics, animal behaviour, ecology, conservation science, and plant biology allow students to tailor their degree to their individual interests and career goals.
