COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biological Sciences BSc at Leeds provides a comprehensive understanding of life at the molecular and cellular level, combining theory and practical skills. In the first year, students study microbiology, genetics, immunology, biochemistry, and cell biology, developing laboratory skills through hands-on experiments, data analysis, and problem-solving. Core modules introduce fundamental concepts such as the basis of life, microbial diversity, immune function, and genetics, while optional and discovery modules allow students to explore topics like human body systems, evolutionary diversity, and environmental interactions. In the second year, students build on these foundations with advanced study in omics and big data biology, and can choose to specialise in themes such as Infection and Disease, Genome Biology and Disease, or Molecular Medicine. Compulsory modules focus on laboratory skills, bioinformatics, and molecular analysis, while optional modules allow deeper exploration of virology, pharmacology, immunology, and human disease. Opportunities for industrial placements or study abroad are also offered. In the third year, students undertake an independent research project, applying all skills learned to laboratory, literature, or computational investigations. Advanced research-led modules provide in-depth knowledge of cutting-edge topics such as molecular and cellular biology, microbiology, human genetics, epigenetics, and cancer biology, preparing graduates for careers in research, biotechnology, healthcare, or further study in the life sciences.
