COURSE CURRICULUM

The Medical Engineering BEng at Leeds provides a multidisciplinary education that combines engineering principles with medical science to develop innovative healthcare solutions. In the first year, students build foundational skills through modules in computing, design and manufacture, thermofluids, solid mechanics, engineering materials, and mathematics, gaining hands-on experience in problem-solving and prototyping. In the second year, the focus shifts to applied engineering topics, including engineering mechanics, vibration and control, design and manufacture, economics and management, mechatronics, measurement systems, and advanced thermofluids. These modules develop technical expertise alongside teamwork, project management, and professional skills. In the final year, students specialise in medical engineering, exploring areas such as structure, function, and repair of the body, biomedical engineering design, additive manufacturing, and finite element methods of analysis. Students undertake an individual engineering project that integrates knowledge from prior modules, allowing them to research, design, and develop solutions to real-world medical challenges. This may include assistive robotic exoskeletons, soft sensing technologies, or surgical devices. Throughout the course, students engage with practical, regulatory, and ethical aspects of medical device development, from concept to prototype, preparing them to contribute effectively to healthcare innovation and advance patient care through engineering expertise.
