COURSE CURRICULUM

The Mechanical Engineering BEng at Leeds provides a structured and comprehensive pathway from foundational principles to advanced engineering applications. In the first year, students develop essential skills through modules in computing for engineering analysis, design and manufacture, thermofluids, solid mechanics, engineering materials, and engineering mathematics. These modules introduce fundamental concepts in mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, materials science, and mathematical techniques, alongside practical experience using CAD, workshop tools, MATLAB, and Arduino systems. In the second year, students build on this foundation with advanced modules in engineering mechanics, vibration and control, design and manufacture, thermofluids, mechatronics, and economics and management, emphasizing practical application, team-based projects, and analytical skills. In the final year, students extend their expertise through modules such as additive manufacturing, finite element methods of analysis, and a substantial individual engineering project, where they apply research, planning, and problem-solving skills to a chosen area. Optional modules allow specialization in areas such as biomedical engineering design, automotive propulsion systems, robotics and machine intelligence, vehicle design and analysis, and advanced thermofluids, providing opportunities to tailor learning to specific interests. Across the program, students gain a balance of theoretical knowledge, computational and experimental skills, and practical experience, preparing them for careers in mechanical engineering and related industries.
