COURSE CURRICULUM

The Materials Science and Engineering BEng degree provides a comprehensive and multidisciplinary education, combining principles of engineering, chemistry, and physics with practical laboratory experience. In the first year, students develop foundational knowledge through modules covering professional engineering skills, engineering mathematics, core physics, modern chemistry, and materials science, alongside practical laboratory work to build essential experimental and analytical skills. The second year builds on this foundation with advanced engineering mathematics, numerical methods, process safety, environmental engineering, and deeper study of materials synthesis, characterisation, and chemistry, complemented by continued laboratory practice. Students also explore statistical mechanics and condensed matter physics to understand the properties of different materials. In the final year, the focus shifts to applying knowledge in practical contexts through a materials and process selection design project, where students work individually and in groups using industry-standard software. Specialized modules cover materials for the built environment, energy transition technologies, and the chemistry and applications of materials, including inorganic solids, soft matter, and polymers. Additionally, students study magnetism in condensed matter, connecting theoretical physics to technological applications such as data storage, sensors, and electric motors. Throughout the degree, students gain a balance of theoretical understanding, practical skills, and transferable competencies, preparing them for diverse careers in industries ranging from construction and energy to high-tech engineering and materials innovation.
