COURSE CURRICULUM

The Architectural Engineering BEng program at Leeds combines the study of civil engineering principles with architectural design to prepare students for creating high-performance, sustainable, and resilient buildings. In the first year, students develop a foundation in subjects such as architecture and sustainability, structural analysis, construction technology, materials, water and soils, and engineering mathematics, alongside practical skills in surveying and design through an integrated design project. The second year builds on this knowledge with modules in structural design, geotechnics, water engineering, building physics, architectural history, and a design studio that emphasizes the integration of technical and creative design solutions. Students gain a deeper understanding of materials such as concrete, steel, and timber, as well as the analysis and design of complex structural systems. In the third year, the focus shifts to advanced structural analysis, multi-storey building design, prestressed concrete, masonry, and timber construction. Students engage in a design studio project, considering regulatory, planning, and environmental contexts, while completing an individual research project to develop independent study and critical analysis skills. Complementary modules in architectural history, building physics, and optional subjects such as environmental health engineering or computational methods further enhance students’ understanding of technical, social, and environmental aspects of building design, preparing them for careers as innovative and sustainable architectural engineers.
