COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BChD) at Leeds is a five-year integrated program combining clinical dentistry, biomedical science, and professional development to prepare students for safe and independent dental practice. From the first year, students gain foundational knowledge in dental and biomedical sciences, including cell biology, microbiology, oral health, and diagnostic tools, alongside basic clinical skills, professional behaviours, and enquiry into population health. In the second year, learning advances to include patient assessment, operative skills, communication within the dental team, and deeper scientific understanding of oral and systemic health, pathology, and disease mechanisms, supported by supervised clinical experience. In the third and fourth years, students consolidate their clinical skills across adult and child care, restoration, orthodontics, oral surgery, and emerging technologies, integrating evidence-based practice with ethical, cultural, and societal considerations. Personal and professional development focuses on leadership, teamwork, cultural competence, social accountability, wellbeing, and reflection. The Enquire theme throughout the program culminates in a Capstone project, allowing students to apply research, enquiry, and population health principles in a real-world or academic context. In the final year, students complete advanced clinical practice, providing comprehensive care, coordinating treatment, and presenting patient case reports. The program ensures graduates meet the standards for registration with the General Dental Council, combining technical expertise, ethical awareness, and reflective professional practice.
