COURSE CURRICULUM

The Japanese and Russian BA at Leeds is a five-year program designed to develop advanced proficiency in both languages while providing a deep understanding of the histories, cultures, and societies of Japan and Russian-speaking countries. In the first year, students study modules on modern Japan and an introduction to Russian studies, exploring the political, social, and cultural dynamics of each region and challenging common stereotypes. Language learning begins with beginner or intermediate modules in both Japanese and Russian, with options for heritage speakers of Russian. In the second year, students continue developing their Japanese and Russian skills through intermediate or upper-intermediate modules and core Russian language modules, alongside optional modules covering Japanese cinema, religion, international relations, literature, and technology. Years three and four are devoted to immersive study abroad experiences in Japan and a Russian-speaking country, allowing students to consolidate language skills and gain first-hand cultural insight. The fifth year focuses on advanced communication in Japanese and Russian, integrating grammar, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Students also complete a substantial Final Year Project, which can take the form of a dissertation, translation project, or digitised research-based podcast. Optional modules in the final year cover advanced language in context, translation, modern Japanese history, Sino-Japanese relations, and Russian literature and culture, equipping graduates with linguistic, analytical, and intercultural skills for global careers.
