COURSE CURRICULUM

The Chinese and Thai Studies BA is a comprehensive five-year program designed to develop advanced proficiency in both Chinese and Thai while providing an in-depth understanding of the cultural, political, and historical contexts of China, Thailand, and the broader East Asian region. In the first year, students study foundational modules such as Modern China: History and Culture and Foundations of East Asia, alongside language modules in Chinese and Thai or optional modules on East Asian religions and philosophies. The second year builds on this foundation, with intermediate language study and modules exploring contemporary Thai society, films, and media, as well as Chinese language and culture. Years three and four involve compulsory periods of study abroad in China and Thailand, offering immersive experiences that enhance language skills and cultural understanding. In the final year, students advance their language skills through intensive modules in Chinese and Thai, and undertake a final-year project such as a dissertation, extended translation, or digital documentary, allowing them to conduct independent research on a topic of their choice. Optional modules throughout the program enable exploration of topics including Chinese cinema, classical Chinese, regional politics, religion, and societal issues. Graduates gain linguistic expertise, intercultural awareness, and analytical skills, preparing them for careers in international business, diplomacy, translation, education, and research.
