COURSE CURRICULUM

The Chinese and Japanese Studies BA is a comprehensive program that develops advanced language proficiency in both Chinese and Japanese while providing a deep understanding of the history, culture, and society of these countries. In the first year, students study modules on modern China and Japan alongside beginner or intermediate language courses in both languages. Optional modules allow exploration of East Asian history, culture, and society. In the second and third years, students undertake a compulsory year abroad in China and Japan, which immerses them in the respective cultures and strengthens language skills. Language learning continues in the fourth and fifth years, with advanced modules focusing on Chinese and Japanese communication skills, translation, and authentic language use. Throughout the course, students can select optional modules covering areas such as China since 1979, Japan’s international relations, classical Chinese, modern Japanese history, cinema, religion, and East Asian political economy. The degree culminates in a final-year project, enabling students to conduct independent research or translation work on a topic of their choice, consolidating their analytical, linguistic, and intercultural skills. This program equips graduates with the expertise and experience required for careers in international relations, business, translation, education, or further academic study, combining rigorous language instruction with cultural insight and practical experience.
