COURSE CURRICULUM

The Spanish BA degree at Leeds combines intensive language study with cultural, historical, and literary exploration of Spain and Spanish-speaking regions in Latin America and Africa. In the first year, students focus on developing practical language skills in Spanish while learning research methods for Spanish and Latin American studies. Optional modules allow exploration of topics such as the historical development of Spain and Hispanic America, Catalan language and culture, cultural production in Spain and Spanish America, and beginner Portuguese. The second year continues language development alongside optional modules in areas including Hispanic cinema, literature and the arts, translation theory, modern Spanish history, Catalan language, and Latin American history. A key feature of the degree is the third-year placement abroad, where students immerse themselves in a Spanish-speaking country to practice their language skills and experience the culture firsthand. In the fourth year, students complete advanced language modules and undertake a final-year project, applying their skills in research, translation, or cultural analysis. Optional modules in the final year allow further specialization in areas such as Spanish in business, translation, Catalan language, nationalism, celebrity and culture, and race and representation in the Spanish-speaking world. The program’s combination of language proficiency, cultural knowledge, and practical experience prepares students for global careers requiring linguistic expertise, cultural understanding, and intercultural communication.
