COURSE CURRICULUM

The Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies BA provides a structured approach to developing language proficiency and cultural understanding over four years. In the first year, students take practical language modules in Spanish alongside either beginner or intermediate Portuguese, depending on prior experience, and study the histories and cultures of Brazil, Portugal, and Portuguese-speaking Africa. This foundation is complemented by a research-focused module in Spanish and Latin American studies, equipping students with the academic skills necessary for independent study. In the second year, students continue developing their Spanish and Portuguese language skills while participating in a term abroad, gaining immersive experience and enhancing linguistic competence in a real-world context. The third year is dedicated entirely to a year abroad, allowing students to live and study in Spanish- and/or Portuguese-speaking countries, further refining language skills and deepening their understanding of local cultures, societies, and histories. The final year consolidates advanced linguistic abilities through specialized modules in Spanish and Portuguese translation, emphasizing both practical and analytical skills. Across the degree, students combine rigorous language training with cultural, historical, and research-based learning, preparing them for careers that require advanced language competence, intercultural awareness, and the ability to navigate diverse global contexts.
