COURSE CURRICULUM

The Modern Languages and Philosophy BA is a four-year degree that integrates advanced language learning with in-depth study of philosophy. In the first year, students are introduced to foundational philosophical topics, including moral philosophy and the history of Western philosophy, and learn how to construct and analyse arguments. In subsequent years, students maintain a balance across key areas such as value philosophy, the history of philosophy, and theoretical philosophy, while also having the opportunity to specialise through optional modules in areas like feminist philosophy, ancient philosophy, continental philosophy, and philosophy of language. Language study runs alongside philosophy, with students, whether beginners or advanced learners, developing professional-level skills through intensive modules and a compulsory year abroad, gaining immersive experience in the culture and society of the host country. Language study is complemented by exploring global cultures, including literature, cinema, history, and politics. In the final year, students undertake a Final Year Project in either philosophy or their chosen language and have the flexibility to select advanced philosophy or cultural modules to deepen their expertise. Opportunities also exist to enhance professional language skills through modules on translation, interpreting, or languages for business. This combination of philosophical reasoning, linguistic fluency, and intercultural understanding prepares graduates for careers in education, research, translation, international relations, and other global professions.
