COURSE CURRICULUM

The Modern Languages and Linguistics BA is a four-year joint honours degree that combines intensive language learning with the study of linguistics, offering a comprehensive understanding of both the structure and use of language. Whether starting from a beginners’ level or with prior knowledge, students will reach a professional standard in their chosen language through intensive practice and a compulsory year abroad, providing an immersive experience in the culture and society of the country where the language is spoken. In the first year, students take compulsory language and introductory linguistics modules, alongside optional and discovery modules that explore broader aspects of languages, cultures, and societies. In the second year, language study continues while students take core modules in phonetics and syntax and choose from a range of optional modules to tailor their learning. The third year is spent abroad, further developing linguistic skills and cultural understanding. In the final year, students deepen their knowledge of linguistics, enhance professional language abilities through translation, interpreting, or business language modules, and complete an independent research project, which may take the form of a dissertation, translation, or public engagement project. This combination of advanced language and linguistic study, alongside global cultural insight, prepares graduates for careers in teaching, translation, research, communication, and other international fields.
