COURSE CURRICULUM

The Modern Languages and International Relations BA is a four-year course that combines advanced language learning with a comprehensive understanding of global politics. In the first and second years, students study international organisations, their functions, and the role they play in maintaining world order. Whether starting from a beginners’ level or with prior knowledge, students develop their chosen language to a professional standard through intensive modules and a compulsory year abroad, which provides an immersive opportunity to experience the culture, society, and political environment of the host country. Beginners focus on rapidly building their skills, while advanced learners consolidate and broaden their proficiency. Alongside language acquisition, students explore cultures and societies around the world through a wide range of topics, including literature, cinema, popular culture, history, and politics. In the final year, students complete a compulsory language module and can choose their Final Year Project in either international relations or their chosen language. Depending on their project choice, students may select specialised modules to deepen their knowledge of international relations or cultural studies, and may also enhance professional language skills through translation, interpreting, or business-focused modules. By integrating language, cultural understanding, and international relations expertise, this course prepares graduates for careers in diplomacy, international organisations, global business, translation, policy analysis, and other fields requiring cross-cultural competence and professional communication skills.
