COURSE CURRICULUM

The Modern Languages and History BA combines advanced language learning with in-depth study of historical periods and themes. In the first year, students take compulsory modules designed to provide essential research and academic skills needed for the study of history. As the course progresses, students build on this foundation by focusing on social, cultural, political, and economic themes through a combination of compulsory and optional modules, covering both modern and earlier historical periods. Whether starting from beginners’ level or with prior language knowledge, students develop their chosen language to a professional standard through intensive learning and a compulsory residence abroad in the third year, which provides immersive experience in the culture, society, and history of the host country. Beginners focus on rapidly building language skills, while advanced learners consolidate and broaden their abilities. Alongside language acquisition, students explore the cultures and societies of the countries where their language is spoken, as well as other global contexts, through topics such as literature, cinema, popular culture, history, and politics. In the final year, students complete a compulsory language module and have the option to undertake a Final Year Project in either history or their chosen language, combining analytical, research, and linguistic skills. This integrated approach equips graduates with strong intercultural understanding and prepares them for careers in international relations, education, cultural institutions, translation, and other global fields.
