COURSE CURRICULUM

The Modern Languages and Film Studies BA provides an integrated study of language, culture, and world cinema across four years. In the first year, students are introduced to foundational concepts and research skills in Film Studies, taking a global perspective rather than focusing solely on Hollywood. Simultaneously, language modules ensure intensive learning for both beginners and advanced learners, while students explore cultures and societies worldwide to develop intercultural understanding. In the second year, students build on this foundation by engaging with critical concepts, theoretical frameworks, and methodologies in Film Studies, alongside optional modules that examine the culture, history, and politics of regions where their chosen language is spoken. The third year is spent abroad in a country where the chosen language is spoken, providing immersive linguistic and cultural experience. In the final year, students refine their professional language skills through options such as translation or interpreting and undertake an extended research project, which may take the form of a dissertation, translation, or public engagement project. They also explore advanced approaches and contemporary thinking in Film Studies and have the flexibility to choose language and cultural modules to broaden their expertise. This combination of language proficiency, cultural knowledge, and film analysis equips graduates with versatile skills for careers in media, culture, and international contexts.
