COURSE CURRICULUM

The French BA program provides a comprehensive study of the French language, culture, history, and society, preparing students for professional and intercultural competence. In the first year, students on the post A-level pathway focus on developing French language skills, translation, and cultural awareness, while those on the beginner pathway start with foundational language modules and introductory French studies. All students supplement these with optional and discovery modules covering areas such as literature, visual culture, politics, and intercultural competence. In the second year, students build on prior knowledge with modules exploring French language in context, style, and register, alongside options in history, cinema, literature, translation, and professional applications, while beginner students consolidate language skills and cultural understanding. The third year involves a compulsory residence abroad, allowing full immersion in a French-speaking environment to enhance linguistic fluency and cultural insight. In the final year, students further develop advanced language skills and complete a substantial independent final year project, with options including dissertations, translation research, or public engagement projects. Additional modules cover interpreting, visual culture, historical and contemporary social movements, storytelling, crime and fantastic literature, decolonial approaches, minoritised languages, and linguistics outreach. The program equips graduates with advanced language proficiency, critical thinking, intercultural understanding, and professional skills for careers in translation, international relations, education, media, and cultural sectors.
