COURSE CURRICULUM

The Chinese (Modern) BA at Leeds provides students with a comprehensive study of contemporary China alongside progressive language acquisition. In the first year, students build foundational skills through the compulsory module on Modern China: History and Culture, which explores political, social, and economic developments and their reflection in literature, cinema, and other cultural forms. Optional modules allow students to begin or continue Chinese language study, alongside topics such as East Asian history, religions, philosophies, and intercultural competence. The second year includes a compulsory year abroad, offering immersion in Chinese society to enhance language proficiency and cultural understanding, complemented by optional modules covering regional politics, cinema, classical Chinese, and contemporary societal issues. In the third year, students continue language development through advanced skills modules, and in the final year, they undertake a substantial research project, developing independent research and academic writing skills. Optional modules in the final year allow further specialization in areas such as translation, Chinese society, religion, literature, political economy, and regional studies, enabling students to tailor their learning to personal interests. The program combines rigorous language training, cultural and historical context, and research experience to prepare graduates for careers involving China or East Asia, or for further academic study.
