COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sociology BA degree offers a detailed exploration of the relationships between individuals, communities, and wider society, focusing on the social, cultural, economic, and political processes that shape everyday life. In the first year, students study urban life, identities, inequalities, and the formation of modern societies, gaining a critical understanding of social theory and research methods, while optional discovery modules allow for personal exploration. In the second year, the focus shifts to sociological research methods, ethical considerations in research, and central sociological problems, including social integration, power, culture, and the influence of key thinkers. Students can also select optional modules tailored to their interests, such as disability studies, public policy, or childhood. The third year is centred around independent research, with a dissertation enabling students to investigate a topic in depth, supported by research skills training and methodological pathways. Additional optional modules provide the flexibility to study areas such as gender, global terrorism, and disability, while discovery modules encourage interdisciplinary learning. Throughout the degree, students develop analytical, critical thinking, and research skills, applying sociological theories to real-world issues. The program prepares students for careers in social research, policy analysis, community development, and other fields requiring a nuanced understanding of society and social dynamics.
