COURSE CURRICULUM

The Religion, Theology and Society BA at the University of Leeds offers a comprehensive exploration of religion and its impact on society through historical, philosophical, theological, and social scientific perspectives. In the first year, students study core modules that introduce key concepts, theories, and methods in religious studies, including biblical texts and theological traditions, religion in modern society, and the global practices of Christianity and Islam. Optional modules allow further exploration of religions from India, philosophical questions, and intersections of science, magic, and religion. In the second year, students develop research skills and engage with specialized topics such as sociology of religion, theology in context, postcolonial religious identities, gender and sexuality, human rights, and Dharma traditions, preparing them for independent research. In the final year, students undertake a major research project or an external placement, integrating theoretical knowledge with practical experience. Optional modules offer in-depth study of issues such as religion and mental health, religion and media, global development, gender and sexuality in African contexts, Augustine’s theology, Bible and society, Islam in Europe, and contemporary Christian theological responses to social issues. The course combines academic rigor with practical engagement, equipping students with critical thinking, analytical, and research skills for careers in academia, education, public policy, or other professions where understanding religion and society is essential.
