COURSE CURRICULUM

The Philosophy, Psychology and Scientific Thought BA is an interdisciplinary degree that combines philosophy, psychology, and the history of science to explore fundamental questions about the mind. In the first year, students study the history of psychology and science, the philosophy of mind, cognitive psychology, and the foundations of moral and political philosophy, alongside optional modules that include race, religion, medicine, and scientific history. Core modules also cover developmental, social, and health psychology, providing a broad understanding of human behaviour and mental processes. In the second year, students build research skills in history and philosophy of science, investigate the history of psychiatry and mental illness, and advance their understanding of cognition, perception, and social or developmental psychology. Optional modules allow exploration of global challenges, trust in science, and philosophical debates in ethics, epistemology, and metaphysics. In the final year, students undertake an independent research project, drawing on prior study or exploring new topics, supported by advanced modules in philosophy of mind, or the interaction between mind, brain, and society. Additional optional modules cover a wide range of subjects including bioethics, feminist philosophy, science communication, social and applied psychology, artificial intelligence, reasoning, decision-making, and the development of language. This structure develops analytical, research, and interdisciplinary skills, preparing graduates for diverse academic or professional pathways.
