COURSE CURRICULUM

The Philosophy, Ethics and Religion BA provides an interdisciplinary exploration of fundamental questions about morality, human existence, knowledge, and religious belief. In the first year, students gain a foundation in philosophical reasoning, moral and political philosophy, and the study of religions, including biblical and theological traditions. Optional modules allow exploration of philosophy of religion, global religious practices, religion in society, and topics such as race, science, and magic. In the second year, students develop research skills and methodological approaches for independent projects, studying topics like political philosophy, human rights, epistemology, metaphysics, and contextual or postcolonial theologies. Optional modules further explore moral philosophy, philosophy of religion, and the role of religion in gender, sexuality, and society. In the final year, students undertake an independent, integrated, or placement-based research project to apply their knowledge in academic or practical contexts. Optional advanced modules allow students to specialize in areas such as bioethics, feminist philosophy, aesthetics, war and justice, philosophy of sex and relationships, continental philosophy, religion and mental health, global development, Augustine, and contemporary theological issues. The degree combines philosophical analysis, ethical inquiry, and religious studies, developing critical thinking, research, and analytical skills while providing a deep understanding of religious and ethical issues in historical, cultural, and contemporary contexts.
