COURSE CURRICULUM

The Philosophy and Politics BA is a joint honours degree that provides a comprehensive foundation in philosophical inquiry and the study of political systems. In the first year, students develop core skills in reasoning and argumentation through modules such as How to do Philosophy and The Good, the Bad, the Right, the Wrong, while also gaining an introduction to comparative politics and western political thought through modules like Comparative Politics and Freedom, Power and Resistance. Optional modules allow students to explore areas such as the history of philosophy, international politics, and contemporary social issues. In the second year, the focus shifts to developing analytical skills and understanding the interplay between philosophy and politics. Students study philosophical methods and intermediate topics in political philosophy, alongside one of two modules examining modern political thinkers or contemporary political debates. Optional modules broaden the scope, offering studies in epistemology, metaphysics, moral and political philosophy, and regional politics including the EU, China, Africa, and the United States. In the final year, students undertake a substantial independent research project in either philosophy or politics, supported by an academic supervisor, while selecting advanced optional modules in areas such as feminist philosophy, bioethics, ancient and continental philosophy, global politics, national identity, and contemporary political issues. The program equips students with critical thinking, research, and analytical skills applicable to a wide range of academic and professional paths.
