COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA in Music and Music Technology at Leeds provides a comprehensive education that balances the study of music with practical and creative aspects of music technology. In the first year, students take core modules in studio recording, electronic music, music and society, and materials of music, developing foundational skills in both music theory and practice, while optional modules allow exploration of areas such as performance, film music, and music technology. In the second year, the focus shifts to applied music technology, computer music, researching music, and skills in context, encouraging students to develop applied, critical, and problem-solving abilities while engaging in real-world experiences and research methods. Optional modules further allow personalisation in areas such as music business, aesthetics, performance, and contemporary composition. In the third year, students undertake an independent research project, supported by a supervisor, which may take the form of a portfolio of practice, a recording project, software development, or an extended dissertation. Compulsory modules in creative music technology and music beyond graduation provide opportunities to engage with specialist areas, practical applications, and professional contexts. Throughout the course, students can select optional modules each year to tailor their learning to their specific interests and career ambitions, while gaining a combination of technical, creative, research, and transferable skills applicable in music performance, production, and technology-related industries.
