COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Music and Music Psychology course at Leeds integrates the study of music with the scientific understanding of musical behavior, combining theoretical, practical, and applied approaches across three years. In the first year, compulsory modules introduce students to the foundations of music psychology, including cognitive, developmental, and social approaches, alongside thematic exploration of music in society and global music theory. Students also develop critical research skills and may choose optional modules in areas such as collaborative performance, composition, film music, music business, technology, performance, and popular music. The second year deepens understanding of music psychology and its applications, covering listening and performance behaviors, therapeutic uses of music, empirical and practice-based research techniques, and professional skills in applied contexts. Optional modules allow further specialization in aesthetics, performance, and musicology. In the third year, students complete an Independent Research Project, which may take the form of an empirical study, practice-based portfolio, or dissertation, guided by a supervisor. Additional compulsory modules focus on advancing knowledge in music psychology and applying expertise beyond the university, preparing students for professional, research, or applied roles. Optional modules in collaborative performance, composition, critical theory, music analysis, and music technology allow students to further tailor their studies. This course equips students with a combination of analytical, creative, and transferable skills for careers in music, research, therapy, education, and related fields.
