COURSE CURRICULUM

The Linguistics BA program provides a thorough exploration of the scientific study of language, focusing on its structure, use, and cognitive representation. In the first year, students develop foundational skills in linguistics, including academic research, data collection, critical thinking, and presentation. Core modules cover language structure and sound, syntax and morphology, semantics and pragmatics, language acquisition, sociolinguistics, and global language varieties, enabling students to analyze and communicate linguistic phenomena. Year two builds on this foundation with advanced study in phonetics, including speech production and acoustic analysis, and syntax, introducing formal systems and practical linguistic analysis. Optional modules allow students to explore psycholinguistics, the biological basis of language acquisition, language evolution and endangerment, and interactional linguistics, examining patterns of verbal interaction. In the third year, students undertake a substantial dissertation, conducting independent research on a topic of their choice, applying both theoretical and empirical methods, and developing advanced research and analytical skills. Additional optional modules in the final year provide opportunities to study languages in contact, language and gender, and experimental syntax, deepening understanding of multilingualism, sociocultural aspects of language, and generative linguistic theory. The course combines theoretical study with practical research experience, equipping students with transferable skills applicable in academia, education, communication, and related careers.
