COURSE CURRICULUM

The Journalism BA at Leeds combines theoretical study with practical training to prepare students for careers in journalism and media industries. In the first year, students develop a strong foundation through compulsory modules covering the basics of journalism, media law, ethics, production skills, and research methods. They learn how journalism interacts with politics and society, gaining essential analytical and practical skills. In the second year, students build on this foundation with modules focused on digital journalism, investigative techniques, broadcast practice, and ethical issues, while also having the option to explore topics such as media power, social justice, and communication research. Year three emphasizes hands-on experience, with a compulsory live news production module and a choice between an individual project portfolio or a dissertation, allowing students to pursue independent research or practical projects. Optional modules enable further specialization in areas such as international communication, audience analysis, and political reporting. Across years two and three, students can also select discovery modules to broaden their academic experience, explore personal interests, or develop transferable skills like marketing or critical thinking. The program balances rigorous academic study with extensive practical experience, equipping graduates with professional expertise, critical insight, and versatile skills needed to succeed in contemporary journalism and related media careers.
