COURSE CURRICULUM

The Islamic, Middle Eastern and North African Studies BA provides a comprehensive and interdisciplinary understanding of the region, combining history, culture, politics, religion, and language. In the first year, students gain foundational knowledge through compulsory modules in Middle Eastern and North African studies and Islamic theology, while optional modules allow exploration of subjects such as Arabic and Persian language, early Islamic history, literature, politics, and audiovisual culture. In the second year, students deepen their understanding with core modules on the cultures of the Arab world and Islamic law, while optional modules offer the study of contemporary issues such as the Arab-Israeli conflict, global jihad, modern Middle Eastern history, media, literature, and environmental humanities. The third year focuses on advanced analysis and research, with compulsory modules addressing Islam and modernity, Middle Eastern politics, and a substantial final year project, allowing students to develop independent research skills. Optional third-year modules provide further opportunities to engage with scripture, language, and cultural practices, including the Qur’an and Hadith, advanced Arabic, and performing Islam. Throughout the degree, students cultivate critical thinking, analytical skills, and linguistic competence, preparing them for careers in research, international relations, policy, education, and other fields requiring in-depth knowledge of the Middle East and North Africa and the ability to engage thoughtfully with global and regional issues.
