COURSE CURRICULUM

The History BA at the University of Leeds provides a comprehensive and flexible program that develops both knowledge and skills in historical research, analysis, and communication. In the first year, students focus on transitioning to degree-level study through core modules such as Exploring History, which builds essential research and analytical skills, and Diverse Histories of Britain, which examines the country’s history from medieval to modern periods through inclusive and innovative perspectives. Optional modules allow students to explore global and thematic histories, ranging from medieval to twentieth-century contexts. In the second year, the History in Practice module enables students to engage with primary sources, digital tools, and public-facing projects, while optional modules allow further specialisation in areas such as imperial history, industrialisation, and global politics. In the final year, students specialise through a research-based Special Subject module and complete a Final Year Project, choosing either a traditional dissertation or a public history project such as a podcast, exhibition, or website. Additional optional modules provide advanced thematic study, covering topics such as South Asian decolonisation, the Spanish Civil War, disability history, photography, and modern European politics. Across all years, the course emphasises independent research, critical thinking, and effective communication, preparing graduates for careers in heritage, research, public engagement, and beyond.
