COURSE CURRICULUM

The History and Sociology BA provides a structured blend of foundational and advanced training across both disciplines. In Year 1, compulsory modules introduce core sociological theory, decolonial perspectives, and essential historical skills, alongside an exploration of Britain’s diverse past. Optional modules allow you to study themes from medieval cultures to global empires and twentieth-century history. Year 2 deepens your understanding through modules on major sociological thinkers, key debates on modernity, and practical historical research involving archives, digital methods and public history. A wide range of optional modules covers topics such as pandemics, gender, race, crime, climate crisis, global histories and political transformations. In Year 3, you undertake an independent dissertation in either history or sociology, developing expertise in your chosen subject area. Additional optional modules offer opportunities to specialise in themes such as democracy in South Asia, the Harlem Renaissance, the Third Reich, medieval spirituality, gender and slavery, global terrorism, ethnicity, disability and quantitative research. Throughout the course, students build strong analytical, research and critical thinking skills while exploring major social and historical issues shaping past and present societies.
