COURSE CURRICULUM

The Human Geography BA at Leeds provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the social, political, economic, and environmental processes shaping our world. In the first year, students develop foundational knowledge of urbanisation, migration, globalisation, environmental challenges, and population change, alongside skills in digital learning, data analysis, and academic writing. Core modules such as The Urban Age, Planet Under Threat, and Digital Geographies introduce key concepts and practical tools, while optional modules allow exploration of geopolitics, population studies, landscapes, and transport. Year two builds research and career skills through modules like Career Skills in Geography, Research Approaches in Human Geography, and Social and Spatial Data Analysis with GIS, equipping students with qualitative and quantitative methods, fieldwork experience, and advanced data analysis capabilities. Optional modules cover urban development, economic geography, food systems, climate, natural hazards, and transport planning. In the final year, students undertake an independent dissertation, developing skills in research design, data collection, analysis, and project management. They can complement this with a range of optional modules spanning urban social movements, global insecurities, migration crises, retail planning, sustainability, and physical geography topics. Opportunities for research, work, or teaching placements allow students to apply their knowledge practically, preparing them for careers across public, private, and non-governmental sectors.
