COURSE CURRICULUM

The Fine Art BA at Leeds is structured to develop students as independent, critically aware, and socially engaged creative practitioners through a combination of practical studio work, theoretical study, and research-led projects. In the first year, students explore foundational concepts in fine art practice, art history, and cultural theory while experimenting across diverse media such as film, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, photography, and audio-visual practices. Modules emphasize independent and collaborative work, critical thinking, and public presentation of student projects. In the second year, students further develop their practice through self-directed research, engaging with audiences, and considering the social and cultural contexts of art production and dissemination. They also have the opportunity to select from a range of optional modules covering topics such as Asian visual culture, modernism, the Grand Tour, the art market, African art, feminist and postcolonial perspectives, and Renaissance art. The final year consolidates students’ creative and critical skills through advanced studio practice, culminating in a public degree show, alongside an independently supervised dissertation that integrates research with practice. Optional modules extend learning into areas including photography, postcolonial feminisms, cultural memory, museum studies, and diasporic cinema, allowing students to explore historical, social, and global perspectives. The program equips graduates with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to pursue careers in art, curation, research, or further study.
