COURSE CURRICULUM

The Fine Art with History of Art BA combines practical studio work with critical study, allowing students to explore contemporary and historical art across a broad range of cultures and periods. In the first year, students engage with core modules in fine art practice, art history, and cultural theory, developing technical skills in media such as film, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, photography, and audio-visual practices. They also gain an understanding of contemporary art practices through workshops, projects, and exhibitions, while studying art history from global and modern perspectives, challenging traditional narratives and myths. In the second year, students build on their practice through independent studio research and collaborative projects, focusing on audience engagement, display methods, and professional development. Optional modules allow deeper exploration of topics such as Asian visual culture, modernism, the art market, African art, and Renaissance studies. In the final year, students consolidate their creative practice and theoretical knowledge, producing work for exhibitions while developing curatorial and collaborative skills. The dissertation provides an opportunity for independent research, linking studio practice with historical and critical frameworks. Additional optional modules address themes such as cultural memory, postcolonial feminisms, photography, and the global circulation of art. Overall, the program equips students to become socially conscious, innovative, and critically aware practitioners and scholars in the visual arts.
