COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Film, Photography and Media program at the University of Leeds provides a comprehensive blend of theoretical study and practical application across three years. In the first year, students develop foundational skills in media and communication research, camera and editing techniques, cinematic analysis, photographic practices, and screen narrative, with optional modules exploring media history, theory, and cultural studies. The second year deepens practical and analytical expertise, with compulsory modules in photography theory and practice and cinematic themes, alongside opportunities to engage in documentary or short film production. Optional modules allow further exploration of media technologies, digital storytelling, podcasting, and screen fiction, supporting both creative and research-based learning. In the final year, students undertake major projects or dissertations in areas such as moving image, scriptwriting, cinema, photography, or communication studies, providing the opportunity to synthesise skills gained over the program. Additional modules focus on documentary, reality, and contemporary photographic themes, while optional modules encourage exploration of international communication, media placement, identity, and audience studies. Across all three years, the program integrates critical thinking, analytical research, and creative production, enabling students to understand the cultural, historical, and industrial contexts of media while developing professional technical skills. Graduates leave equipped for diverse careers in media, film, photography, and related creative industries, with both theoretical insight and practical expertise.
