COURSE CURRICULUM

Across three levels of study, the English, Theatre and Performance BA gradually builds your creative, analytical and practical expertise through a blend of literature, performance theory and hands-on theatre work. In the first year, you develop core skills in reading, writing and performance through modules that introduce literary analysis, studio-based creative practice, devising for public performance, and foundational perspectives in performance studies or writing. You also choose from optional modules in areas such as drama, literature, and creative writing. In the second year, you deepen your understanding of theatre and performance history, contemporary creative practices, and the relationship between the body, language and representation. You also select further modules exploring environmental literature, socially engaged theatre, directing, Renaissance literature, American writing or contemporary fiction. The final year offers significant flexibility, allowing you to specialise through advanced research-led modules in literature, language or performance. You undertake an independent research project—either a group performance for a public audience or an extended written dissertation—tailored to your academic and creative interests. Additional optional modules in areas such as cultural management, Shakespeare, performance design and modernist studies enable you to refine your professional and artistic direction as you prepare for your future career.
