COURSE CURRICULUM

The English Literature with Creative Writing program offers a rich blend of literary study and creative development across three years, beginning with foundational modules that build core skills in creative writing, critical reading and effective communication. In the first year, you learn to analyse texts from a writer’s perspective, engage with key theories that shape literary study, and develop strong academic writing techniques. You can also choose from a variety of optional modules exploring drama, poetry, modern fiction, race and decolonisation, or specialist creative genres. In the second year, your creative practice deepens through sustained support from published writers, while compulsory modules explore literature’s relationship with the environment, culture, embodiment and human identity. A diverse range of optional modules allows you to focus on different literary periods, genres, or writing forms, including scriptwriting, travel writing and children’s literature. In the final year, you undertake an independent creative writing project guided by a supervisor and gain insight into publication processes through work on the university’s literary journal. Teaching includes workshops, seminars, lectures, masterclasses and one-to-one supervision, supported by access to the Brotherton Library’s Special Collections. This structure helps you grow as both a creative practitioner and a critical thinker, preparing you for careers in writing, media and the wider creative industries.
