COURSE CURRICULUM

The English Language and Literature course offers a rich blend of linguistic and literary study from the first year onward, beginning with modules that explore English structure, variation, creativity, and key approaches to reading and writing. Students develop core analytical, communication and research skills through modules such as English Structure, Style and Genre, English Variation, Reading Between the Lines, and Writing Matters, with optional choices in poetry, drama, modern fiction, and decolonial writing. In the second year, the curriculum deepens through modules examining the power of language, sociolinguistics, environmental literature, and embodiment in literary representation. Students explore how language shapes social identities, how texts persuade, and how literature reflects human relationships with nature, the body and society. A wide range of optional modules allows exploration of areas such as forensic linguistics, digital discourse, historical literature, stylistics and global Englishes. The final year centres on an independent research project in either linguistics or literature, supported by a choice of advanced optional modules taught by research specialists. Students can pursue topics including crime fiction stylistics, language policy, postcolonial literature, global writing, Shakespeare on film, memoir, sociolinguistics and contemporary cultural concerns, preparing them for diverse careers requiring strong analytical and communication skills.
