COURSE CURRICULUM

The English and Sociology BA combines literary study with sociological analysis, allowing students to explore how texts and societies shape one another. In the first year, you develop core skills in close reading, academic writing and critical thinking through modules focused on literary interpretation and communication, while also being introduced to key sociological theories, concepts and debates. You examine how modern societies have been formed, how coloniality influences social structures and how social theory helps make sense of everyday life. Optional modules allow you to begin tailoring your studies through topics such as identities, inequalities, race, modern fiction, drama and poetry. In the second year, you study literature in relation to nature, embodiment and culture, while deepening your understanding of sociological perspectives on power, integration, belief systems and social change. You also learn essential research methods, from designing questionnaires to conducting interviews and analysing social data. A wide range of optional modules covers areas including gender, disability, crime, religion, postcolonial writing, American literature and contemporary fiction. In the final year, you complete an independent project in English or Sociology and choose from advanced modules exploring themes such as global politics, terrorism, consumerism, migration, social movements, African writing, refugee narratives and cultural expression.
