COURSE CURRICULUM

The English and History BA provides an integrated exploration of literature and history, combining the study of prose, poetry, drama, and historical events from medieval to modern times. In the first year, compulsory modules develop foundational skills in literary analysis, writing, and historical research, with opportunities to critically engage with texts and explore Britain’s diverse histories. Optional modules allow students to pursue interests in areas such as modern fiction, drama, medieval studies, and global history. In the second year, core modules focus on human-environment interactions, embodiment, and practical historical skills, including archival work, digital humanities, and public engagement, while optional modules offer specialisms in Renaissance literature, postcolonial studies, and world history. The final year culminates in a substantial independent project, either an English dissertation or a history dissertation, enabling students to conduct in-depth research and demonstrate scholarly independence. Additional optional modules allow further exploration of topics such as Arthurian legend, eighteenth-century literature, American culture, colonial and postcolonial histories, disability studies, European and global conflicts, and twentieth-century politics. Throughout the degree, students develop critical thinking, research, and communication skills, while engaging with diverse literary and historical perspectives. The program prepares graduates for careers in education, cultural and heritage sectors, research, media, and other fields requiring analytical and interpretive expertise.
