COURSE CURRICULUM

The English and History of Art BA combines the study of literature and visual culture, enabling students to explore English literature from the medieval period to the present alongside the historical and critical study of art. In the first year, compulsory modules such as Reading Between the Lines and Writing Matters introduce students to critical analysis, literary theory, and effective writing, while Art History as Practice and From Art History’s Myths to Critical Art History provide foundational knowledge of art-historical research, key movements, and critical perspectives. Students can also select from a wide range of optional modules in both disciplines to develop their interests. In the second year, core modules like Writing Environments: Literature, Nature, Culture and Body Language: Literature and Embodiment deepen understanding of the interplay between humans, culture, and the natural world in literary texts, while Methods in Practice and Origins, Structures, and Critique in Art History focus on research skills, methodological approaches, and the critical interrogation of the discipline’s history and legacies. Students continue to select optional modules across both fields to tailor their learning. In the final year, the compulsory Final Year Project allows students to undertake independent research, synthesizing skills from previous years, while optional modules in English and Art History offer opportunities to study topics such as postcolonial literature, contemporary art, cultural memory, and global artistic traditions, preparing graduates for careers in research, the arts, heritage, and cultural sectors.
