COURSE CURRICULUM

The English and Film Studies BA combines the study of English literature with global cinema, providing a thorough understanding of both disciplines and their interconnections. In the first year, compulsory modules such as Writing Matters, Reading Between the Lines, and Introduction to Film Studies I and II build foundational skills in literary analysis, critical thinking, and film studies, while optional modules allow exploration of areas like modern fiction, film music, directing world cinemas, and decolonization in literature. In the second year, compulsory modules including Body Language: Literature and Embodiment and Critical Approaches to Screen Studies deepen analytical skills and examine the relationship between literature, the body, and visual storytelling. Optional modules expand students’ knowledge of global cinema and literature, covering subjects such as Chinese and German cinema, postcolonial literature, women’s authorship in world cinema, genre studies, and film programming and curation. In the final year, students undertake compulsory modules including Current Enquiries into Film Studies and a Final Year Project, allowing them to conduct independent research and apply critical and creative skills in a sustained project. Optional modules provide further specialization across literature and film, with topics including Japanese cinema, Shakespeare, post-war European cinema, queer films, postcolonial London, and digital cinema. The program equips students with versatile skills in critical analysis, research, and communication, preparing them for careers in creative, cultural, and media industries.
