COURSE CURRICULUM

The English and Comparative Literature BA offers a comprehensive exploration of literature from around the world, combining English literature with global texts in translation and fostering an understanding of diverse cultural, historical, and theoretical perspectives. In the first year, compulsory modules such as Worlds of Literature, Writing Matters, and Reading Between the Lines develop critical thinking, writing, and analytical skills, while optional modules allow students to explore areas such as modern fiction, drama, poetry, world histories, and language studies. The second year builds on these foundations with compulsory modules like Reception, Transmission and Translation, Writing Environments, and Body Language, which examine global literary circulation, human-environment interactions, and embodiment in literature, alongside optional modules covering Black Europe, trauma narratives, Russian literature, environmental humanities, and classical texts. In the final year, students undertake a major independent project, which can take the form of a dissertation, textual editing project, or public engagement project, demonstrating research and analytical skills. Additional optional modules allow for specialization in contemporary world literature, postcolonial literature, Holocaust representation, digital Englishes, creative writing, and studies of disability, mental health, gender, and culture. Throughout the degree, students develop advanced research, writing, and critical analysis skills, while engaging with literature in both historical and contemporary contexts, preparing them for careers in writing, publishing, media, education, and cultural research.
