COURSE CURRICULUM

The Economics and History BA offers a multidisciplinary approach, combining rigorous study of economic theory with a deep understanding of historical developments. In the first year, students gain foundational knowledge in both subjects through core modules such as Exploring History, Diverse Histories of Britain, Economic Theory and Applications, Economics and Global History, and Mathematics and Statistics for Economics and Business. Optional modules allow students to explore areas such as medieval history, global empires, decolonisation, and twentieth-century developments. In the second year, the program builds on this foundation with intermediate economics modules in microeconomics and macroeconomics alongside History in Practice, which develops research skills through engagement with archives, digital humanities, and heritage projects. Optional modules provide opportunities to study topics ranging from Britain’s industrial revolution to international economics, labour, business economics, and evolution of economic ideas. In the final year, students undertake a substantial independent research project, choosing either a History Long Essay or an Economics Joint Honours Final Year Project. Optional modules in the final year allow in-depth exploration of global historical events, social and cultural history, political developments, and economic issues, such as development economics and international economic integration. The course equips students with critical thinking, research, analytical, and quantitative skills, preparing them for careers in economics, public policy, research, and related fields.
