COURSE CURRICULUM

The Cultural and Media Studies BA provides a comprehensive exploration of culture, media, and communication across historical, social, and global contexts. In the first year, students engage with foundational modules such as Introduction to Cultural Analysis, which develops skills in critically interpreting a wide range of cultural forms, including film, literature, music, and art, while exploring questions of representation, ideology, authorship, and difference. Networks, Environments and Cultures examines the interconnectedness of digital and analogue networks, exploring identity, knowledge production, and the social and political implications of contemporary media. Students also choose between modules in Cultural History or Studying Media to gain historical or media-specific perspectives. In the second year, compulsory modules such as Keywords and Visual Communication or Digital Cultures deepen analytical and visual literacy skills, while optional modules allow students to study topics such as utopian thinking, race, gender, and the representation of difference. The third year focuses on independent research through a dissertation, supported by a range of optional modules including Postcolonial Feminisms, Deconstruction Reading Politics, the Cultural Politics of Artificial Intelligence, and Movies, Migrants and Diasporas. Across all years, the program emphasizes critical thinking, research skills, and interdisciplinary perspectives, preparing students to analyze cultural phenomena, media practices, and their social, political, and technological contexts, while offering opportunities for applied learning and professional development.
