COURSE CURRICULUM

The Criminal Justice and Criminology BA provides a comprehensive understanding of crime, offending, and the criminal justice system, combining theoretical, legal, and practical perspectives. In Year 1, students build foundational knowledge through modules on research skills, criminology, crime and inequality, criminal law, and the structure of criminal justice institutions. These modules introduce students to key concepts, data sources, and analytical approaches, preparing them for deeper engagement with the subject. In Year 2, students further develop their expertise with compulsory modules on crime prevention, criminological theories, policing, and research methods, while optional and discovery modules allow exploration of topics such as youth crime, emergencies, international human rights law, race, gender, and social justice. The program emphasizes critical thinking, data analysis, and independent research skills. In Year 3, students undertake advanced modules including transnational and comparative criminology, penology, and a final year project, applying their knowledge to real-world issues and research. Quantitative pathway students engage with statistical and data analysis techniques, enhancing skills for empirical research. Optional modules offer further specialization in areas such as state crime, global terrorism, disability law, cyberlaw, gender, and historical perspectives on crime. Overall, the program equips students with the analytical, research, and professional skills necessary for careers in criminal justice, policy, research, and related fields.
