COURSE CURRICULUM

The Childhood Studies BA is structured over three years, providing students with a progressive understanding of childhood and youth. In the first year, students explore foundational topics, including psychological approaches to child development and education, the social construction of childhood, and the role of children, young people, and families within the state. They also study children’s rights and social justice, developing a strong awareness of ethical, social, and cultural considerations that impact young people. In the second year, the focus shifts to applied knowledge and research skills, with modules covering research methods, child welfare, health and well-being in childhood and youth, and psychological approaches to understanding and supporting children’s learning. These modules equip students with the ability to critically analyse issues affecting children and to apply practical strategies in professional contexts. In the final year, students undertake a substantial research project, allowing them to engage in in-depth investigation of a specific topic within childhood studies. Additional modules address children, families, and cultural diversity through philosophical perspectives and explore critical debates in childhood and youth research, fostering analytical and evaluative skills. Across all three years, the degree combines theoretical study with practical and research-based learning, preparing graduates for careers in education, social work, policy, and other roles supporting children, young people, and families.
