COURSE CURRICULUM

The Ancient History BA provides a structured and immersive journey through the civilisations of Greece, Rome and the wider ancient world, beginning in Year 1 with core modules that introduce students to major historical periods, key archaeological methods and important cultural texts. You’ll explore Greek and Roman history, examine ancient biographies, and study Britain’s diverse historical narratives, supported by optional language and literature modules in Greek and Latin. In Year 2, the program deepens your understanding through modules that focus on marginalised groups in antiquity, critical engagement with classical evidence and the mechanisms of ancient empires in Greece, Rome and Persia. A wide range of optional modules allows you to tailor your studies to specific interests, such as classical literature, religion, cultural reception and environmental history. By Year 3, you will undertake a substantial independent research project, developing specialist knowledge and advanced research skills under academic supervision. You can further customise your final year through advanced optional modules covering topics like Herodotus, Alexander the Great, Greek art, Roman cities and ancient languages at higher levels. Across all years, the degree combines historical, archaeological and literary approaches, equipping you with deep insight into ancient societies and strong analytical and research abilities.
