COURSE CURRICULUM

The Ancient History and Philosophy BA curriculum provides a structured blend of classical studies and philosophical training across three years. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge of the Greek and Roman worlds, exploring major historical periods, social and cultural developments, and key evidence used to study antiquity. Alongside this, they develop essential reasoning and analytical skills through an introduction to philosophical methods, with optional modules allowing them to begin exploring topics such as ancient languages, the mind, religion, ethics, race and reality. In the second year, students deepen their engagement with classical research through a core module focused on evidence, enquiry and scholarly practice, while choosing from a wide range of optional modules covering Greek and Roman history, mythology, art, religion and literature. They can also advance their study of political philosophy, moral philosophy, epistemology, metaphysics and the philosophy of religion. The final year centres on an extended research project in either philosophy or ancient history, supported by a specialist supervisor, while optional modules offer further opportunities to explore advanced topics including Greek and Roman culture, ancient literature, ethics, bioethics, war, justice, technology, art, feminist thought and ancient philosophy, enabling students to refine their special interests.
