COURSE CURRICULUM

The Ancient History and History BA offers a structured pathway through historical study from the ancient world to the modern era. In Year 1, you build foundational knowledge through core modules on Greek and Roman history, the skills of historical research and the diverse histories of Britain, supported by optional modules ranging from ancient languages and classical archaeology to medieval, early modern and modern global history. Year 2 deepens your expertise with compulsory modules that strengthen your ability to analyse classical sources and understand how history is produced and communicated. A broad selection of optional modules allows you to tailor your studies to themes such as ancient empires, Greek art, mythological traditions, medieval Europe, empire, industrialisation and global encounters. In Year 3, you complete an extended research project in either History or Classics, enabling you to undertake independent work guided by a specialist supervisor. You also choose a History Special Subject in areas such as medieval belief, photographic culture or European expansion, while further optional modules allow advanced study of topics across classical antiquity and world history. Across all years, the program blends historical, archaeological and literary approaches, fostering strong analytical, research and communication skills applicable across a wide range of careers.
